Built in the middle
of 18th century; Mayura Water Palace (less well known as Puri
Mayura) was the seat of power for the Balinese kingdom that
ruled western lombok at that time. Its appearance may surprise
visitors as this palace consists of an artificial lake set
in an attractive park, with a raising path leading to a pavilion
in the middle of the lake. This pavilion was a place where

This early 17th century
temple is the largest in lombok, and was built by Prince Anak
Agung, considered more for political reasons than religious
ones, in a sense of uniting the various Hindu groups on the
island. Those groups are symbolized with small offering shrines
inside the innermost part of the temple complex with three
tall roofed shrines symbolizing the 'Trinity lords' of Hindu
belief. They also represent three mountains of Mount Bromo
in Java, Mount Rinjani in lombok and Mount Agung in Bali.
The huge entry gate's relief depicts the tale of Rama and
Shinta.

About 9 km to the northwest
of Mataram lies a unique temple of Lingsar, which is also
known as Pura Lingsar. It was firstly built in 1714, rebuilt
in 1878 with its own unusual characteristic for its mixture
of Hindu and Muslim Sasak devotees. The two religions have
their own compounds, on the different levels. The Sasak worshipers
are members of a minority Muslim, the Wektu Telu. The higher
courtyard is the Hindu place of worship while the lower one
with its own pond is the Wektu telu area. The pond is alive
with eels and devotees, fed with hard-boiled eggs.

Narmada Park (Taman
Narmada) was built in 1805 for King Anak Agung of Mataram.
It is claimed that the gardens named after a sacred river
in India were designed to model Mount Rinjani because the
king was too frail to climb the real mountain. There is a
Balinese temple, Pura Kalasan, in the grounds and the remains
of an aqueduct constructed by the Dutch next to the lake,
a reminder of lombok's colonial past.

The Gili Islands are three small islands,
situated off northwest coast of lombok, with coral reefs, various
brilliant tropical fish and lovely pristine calm beaches surround.
Previously divers mostly visited these three islands. Most hotels
in these islands are very simple and cheap; however, there are
several hotels that can be considered downright luxurious. An
adventurous trip to these islands should be by a small outrigger-motored
boat. Gili Trawangan is the furthest and it would be about an
hour to get there. |
