ABOUT FLORES AND KOMODO

FLORES
Discovered by Portuguese
explorers in 1512 who named Capo de Flores or Cape of Flowers.
Flores is a long and mountainous island, with astonishing landscapes,
rain forests, dramatic volcanoes, deep ravines and picturesque
villages. Ancestral beliefs are still widespread in remote villages.
Flores has great collection in megaliths and cult houses. Also
the sea gardens extend along most of the northern coastline
and offshore reefs and they are most profuse near Maumere where
a diving resort, Sao Wisata, has been developed. Besides the
sea gardens, one of the most popular atractions of the island
area are the three coloured lakes of Kelimutu, in the south
of Ende district.
Divided by mountain chains
and volcanoes the island is populated by ethnic groups with
their own traditions and languages. Predominantly Catholic,
the have retained several aspects of the Portuguese culture
such as the Easter parade held annually at Larantuka on the
eastern part of the island and the Royal Regalia of the former
King of sikka. On the western tip is Labuan Bajo the departure
point for ferries to the Komodo Island. The island has a wealth
of hand woven cloth, a variety of texture and designs from different
parts of the island. The major town or district centres are
accessible by air on Merpati flights and there are daily flights
to Maumere from Denpasar, Bali
Mount Kelimutu, 1,690 metres
fifty years ago, had three lakes, one lake was blue green, one
fiery green and one red. Thirty years later, the colours had
changed to blue, red-brown and cafe au lait. Now, Ata Mbubu
(lake) is a dramatic dark-brown, Ata Polo are dark red-brown,
and only Nua Muri remains aquamarine or turquoise as it apparently
always was. No one can explain the cause of such colour changes
except to suppose that different minerals are dissolved in the
waters of each lake. The countryside surrounding the lake, though
no longer so "natural” as in the days of early Dutch
visitors - some hundred years go - is still mountainous and
dramatic enough, with panoramic views all sides. From the viewing
monument, Ata Mbubu, the colour of bitter chocolate, is to the
west, to the east are blue Nua muri and red-brown Ata Polo,
with Kelimutu (Keli means mountain) in the distance, while to
the south is the higher Keli Bara at 1,731 metres.
KOMODO
A small island of 280 square km, Komodo Island is located between
the island of Sumbawa and Flores. Barren except for palm trees,
Komodo is famous for its giant lizards which are considered
the last of their kind remaining in the world today. The Varannus
komodoensis can grow to a length of three metres and lives on
the carrion of goats, deer and even the carcasses of its own
kind. The only human population on the island is at a fishing
village (also called Komodo) who supplement their income by
breeding goats which are used to bait the lizards, The Komodo
is protected by law and though they are considered harmless,
it is advisable to keep at a distance.
